As an independent artist and furniture designer, Charlie Kamping prefers to work with aluminium and steel. Materials such as wood, glass, stainless steel and copper only have added value for him. Where the carcass of a traditional armchair is often made of wood with 80% upholstery, he opts for the naked truth. “My designs are a search for the best solutions in construction and comfort. Aluminium and steel are ideally suited for this. With these robust materials, everything can be seen, nothing needs to be hidden from view with upholstery. Unless it adds something to the comfort, but then preferably minimally.
Each piece of designer furniture by Charlie is characterised by a unique composition of shape and construction. Straight lines alternate with strong curves, bright colours with subdued, pure shades. Under the motto ‘What you see is what you get’, the construction of each design is clearly visible. “With my design I show that the possibilities of aluminium and steel are in fact endless. For me it is always a search for the surprise in the application, where beauty and function go together. The challenge is to create a unique piece of furniture with a minimum thickness that is constructively and visually strong."
